On a friendly recommendation we headed for the very pretty town of Koblenz. Situated where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, Koblenz is full of historic fortresses, palaces, romantic narrow lanes and inviting town squares.
We walked along the riverside making our way to the famous headland, Deutsches Eck (“German Corner”), where the two rivers meet and a 37m high statue of the former Emperor William I looms above.
For dinner we sat outside at a tapas restaurant in one of the many town squares, drinking sangria and eating hot peppers and haloumi.
Just across from us was a gelato shop that had a line stretching out the door. Dessert was unanimously decided. Joining the crowd we had inadvertently discovered E Gel o Sia, Koblenz’s no. 1 Gelato shop, with a five star rating on TripAdvisor. The flavours are made on site, with deliciousness such as Tiramisu, Raspberry Panna Cotta, Bitter Dark Chocolate and Rochere – two scoops and a wafer for €1.30/$1.70AU.
It was So. Good. The next day as soon as it was an ice-cream appropriate time, 11am, we stopped in again. Ha!
We wanted to solve the problem of freezing in our sleeping bags (Our sleeping bags were rated +5°C, the nights were -1°C and under). But we needed a temporary solution as the days were moving into summer. A couple of €10 fleece blankets, one underneath and one on top, and our sleeping bags became really cozy. Problem solved!
Wanting to be a little spoiled we stayed at Hotel Brenner, a small and simple 3 star hotel with a quick walk right into the centre of town. The decor was all white with gold embellishments with a beautiful sunroom for breakfast – very romantic.
A perfect few days to celebrate our 1st year!
